Mukhanyo Christian Academy
Mukhanyo Christian Academy is a faith-based private school serving AIDS orphans and other vulnerable children in Mpumalanga, a poor region near Pretoria, South Africa. Many of our students struggle with daily survival; they must have their basic needs met before they can be expected to flourish and learn. Our approach nurtures the whole child: in addition to free schooling, our students receive daily nutritious meals, uniforms, and other social services as needed.
The need for intervention is great: more than 40 percent of all South African adults 16 and older are believed to be infected with AIDS, and more than two million children have been orphaned by the disease. In addition, millions of children live with families that have experienced parental illness, death, or unemployment.
Mukhanyo Christian Academy opened in January 2010 — matching the South African seasons and educational calendar — with 20 students in kindergarten and first grade. We are growing. 63 children in kindergarten through grade 5 were enrolled as the 2014 school year began.
